Climate activists protest at several German airports in the latest in a series of demonstrations

BERLIN — Climate activists staged protests at several German airports on Thursday, forcing a temporary flight ban at some of them. It was the latest in a series of similar demonstrations.

According to the group “Last Generation”, a total of eight activists took part in the protests at the airports in Berlin, Cologne-Bonn, Nuremberg and Stuttgart, which began around 5 a.m. The group is calling on the German government to negotiate and sign an agreement on a global phase-out of the use of oil, gas and coal by 2030.

In Cologne-Bonn, flights were suspended after two people were reportedly clinging to the tarmac, but later resumed, the German news agency dpa reported. Police said a hole had been discovered in an airport fence. Flights were also suspended in Nuremberg for about an hour. At Berlin airport, two people who had clung to the ground were removed and detained.

Last month, Last Generation staged protests at Cologne Bonn Airport and Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s busiest airports, significantly disrupting passenger air traffic. Earlier this month, a nighttime protest by climate activists at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a major air cargo hub, forced a three-hour suspension of cargo flights.

Last month, the federal cabinet passed a law that imposes stricter penalties on people who breach the airport border line.

The bill, which still needs to be approved by parliament, provides for penalties of up to two years in prison for people who intentionally enter airport areas such as taxiways or runways, endanger civil aviation or enable others to do so. Currently, such intrusions are punishable only by fines.
