Commanders say QB Jayden Daniels (rib) week-to-week.

Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is “week to week” with a rib injury he suffered early in Sunday’s win over the Carolina Panthers, head coach Dan Quinn said Monday.

Quinn said of the injury, which he did not describe, “It’s not going to be something that’s going to keep him out of action long term.”

“We’ll give the status for Jayden on a week-to-week basis,” Quinn said. “We will take him through all the steps in training and assess how he is doing and keep working on it. We hope he can play, but we will also make sure we take all the precautions and implement them intelligently for the player and the man.”

Quinn confirmed that Daniels, 23, was injured when he “fell awkwardly” at the end of a 46-yard run on the team’s first offensive play. Daniels remained in the game to end the series, which ended with a field goal, before being replaced by veteran Marcus Mariota for the remainder of the contest.

“He was able to finish this drive, but it was the best decision to wait,” Quinn said.

The host Commanders won 40-7 and improved to 5-2. Daniels finished the game with three runs for 50 yards and completed both pass attempts for 6 yards.

Quinn said Daniels will not return to action until recovery is complete.

“We will not miss a single step. It’s really important to get it right and we will,” Quinn said. “He is such a unique player that I want to make sure he can be fully in his own way. The movement, the throwing and everything that goes with it.”

Daniels started all seven games and completed 127 of 168 passes (league-best 75.6%) for 1,410 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. He also has 66 rushing attempts for 372 yards (5.6 yards per carry) and four touchdowns.

The Commanders selected last season’s Heisman Trophy winner out of LSU second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. The top pick, USC quarterback Caleb Williams, went to the Chicago Bears (4-2), who visit Washington on Sunday.
