Game notes: The Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres finish their three-game series on Thursday night before the Tigers travel further coast to face the Oakland Athletics.

The Tigers will have 2018 first-round pick Casey Mize on the mound, making his second start since an extended stint on the injured list. Mize allowed five hits and three earned runs in a game the Tigers lost 7-5 to the Red Sox in overtime after trailing 3-0.

It wasn’t a bad start for Mize, but his career-long problem of not getting enough swings and mishits continued, as Mize had just four strikeouts and produced just eight whiffs.

Still, as Our Man Evan Petzold recently wrote, the Tigers aren’t ready to give up on Mize, despite the numerous injuries he’s suffered and disappointing performances thus far, and the former top pick is one of the key storylines to keep an eye on for the rest of the season.

After Mize and the Tigers play against the Padres, they will face the Athletics in Oakland for the last time, starting at 9:40 p.m. on Friday.
