DeVonta Smith suffers terrible blow in Eagles-Saints game (UPDATE)

(UPDATE): It didn’t take long for the Eagles to announce that DeVonta Smith would miss the rest of the Saints game due to a concussion. The wide receiver is now in protocol alongside Lane Johnson.

In a game that featured multiple injuries in the first half, the Eagles suffered another major blow early in the fourth quarter when DeVonta Smith was hit hard and left on the ground. It was a scary scene for a few minutes while the WR was being tended to, but thankfully he was able to get up and leave the field.

AJ Brown is still working on his recovery from a hamstring injury and missed his second straight game. Britain Covey was ruled out after suffering a shoulder injury in the first half against the Saints. And now that Smith looks like the next WR to go down, this group that had little depth to start the season is even worse off after just three games.

The team has brought Parris Campbell up from the practice squad for the last two games, and it was a good decision as the receiver got to play in New Orleans. They also have Jahan Dotson for depth, but two weeks in a row the coaching staff has praised Dotson’s running routes and attributed his lack of targets to his place in development.

The NFL’s best WR duo – Brown and Smith – doesn’t mean much when both are on the bench. Figuring out how much sustainable depth this group can have will be crucial. It’s a long season, after all, and we’re already seeing a problem in Week 3.
