DOOM Eternal finally offers official mod support on Steam, support in the Microsoft Store is coming “soon”

DOOM Eternal is finally getting official mod support about four years after its initial release, id Software announced during today’s QuakeCon 2024 livestream.

According to a post on Bethesda’s Slayers Club blog, DOOM Eternal Update 6.66 Rev 3 will add the ability to subscribe to mod support via Steam’s beta branch. Support for the Microsoft Store version will be added “soon,” but there is no mention of a console version.

Those who choose the beta branch can create and publish original mods through the idStudio beta program you see above. idStudio tutorials and installation instructions can be found here.

The addition of mods should breathe some more life into DOOM Eternal, which continues to enjoy a strong community post-launch. DOOM Eternal first released in 2020 and received praise for its extensive single-player campaign and, as always, amazing gunplay action.

We wrote in our review at the time: “Eternal in particular tips its hat to DOOM 2 while building on what made the modernized reboot a breath of fresh air for the genre. Whether you’ve been playing DOOM for a few years or decades, DOOM Eternal demands your attention.

Fans have been waiting for official mod support for DOOM Eternal ever since the feature was referenced in the game files uploaded to Steam’s backend, and have been eagerly awaiting the ability to add new maps, levels, and weapons.

“This is the first time in how many years that idtech has been officially moddable? Holy crap. They talked about this years ago but I thought I’d never see it. Eternals Engine has so much potential and now the modding community can fully exploit it instead of being limited,” wrote one excited fan in response to the announcement. “We’ve seen hints of it in SteamDB but I didn’t expect them to give us tools too. It’s like a fever dream.”

Mod support wasn’t the only news from QuakeCon. Bethesda also announced updated versions of DOOM and DOOM 2 with expanded multiplayer support, new content, and more. For more, check out all the biggest games coming in 2024.
