Drive-in food distribution for seniors at the Lake County Fairgrounds on August 13

In partnership with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and Laketran, Lake County Commissioners are hosting a one-time drive-thru food distribution on August 13 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 1301 Mentor Ave.

Officials say the event, which begins at 10 a.m., is specifically for older adults ages 60 and older who live in Lake County and will be held on a first-come, first-served basis.

The distribution is being funded by the Ohio Department of Aging’s Healthy Aging Grant, said Alyea Barajas, Lake County senior services manager.

“We had a small allotment left and decided to use it for this event because food is one of the top priorities (of funding),” she said. “Since a lot of food is distributed in Lake County, we have enough to feed 475 people.”

The boxes contain fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs and dairy products. Registration for the event is not required.

“Combating food insecurity is a focus of these additional funds and this food distribution effort will help our community,” said Commissioner John Plecnik.

Volunteers will assist with transportation and assembling packages, said volunteer services coordinator Cristen Kane.

“We currently have 23 volunteers,” she said, adding that 10 of them are from the Painesville Avery Dennison Corp.

Commissioner Richard Regovich added, “As we find ourselves in these difficult times, providing vital resources like food is critical. We encourage our seniors to come out and take advantage of this opportunity.”

Commissioner John Hamercheck also stressed the importance of cooperation within the Community.

“This (event) is just another example of what can be achieved when we combine our efforts,” he said. “Together we can make a real difference in the lives of our older people.”
