Emma Navarro and Taylor Fritz reach the semifinals of the US Open and can continue their winning streak in American tennis

American Emma Navarro has reached her first Grand Slam semifinal and will enter the top 10 for the first time.

American Taylor Fritz reached his first Grand Slam semifinal and is close to returning to the top 10.

The chances of the Americans’ winning streak continuing were increased by victories by Navarro and Fritz in the quarterfinals of the US Open on Tuesday.

In every year of the modern professional era, at least one American singles player has reached a Grand Slam final. In 2024, this has not yet happened after three Grand Slam tournaments.

The US Open is the last chance, and four Americans are still represented in the singles: Navarro and Fritz, as well as Jessica Pegula and Frances Tiafoe, who will play later in the quarterfinals.

Navarro, who had already won one Grand Slam match before this year, continued her breakthrough season by defeating Spaniard Paula Badosa 6-2, 7-5 on Tuesday, recovering from a 5-1 deficit in the second set.

Navarro, 23 years old and seeded 13th, will face No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka or No. 7 Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals on Thursday.

Navarro won the 2021 NCAA singles title for Virginia and began her professional career after the 2022 NCAA season.

She started 2023 ranked 143rd in the world, played 88 matches this year, mostly at lower levels and in qualifying, and finished 38th.

In 2024, she reached the third round of the Australian Open and the fourth round of the French Open and qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in the foursome.

She then reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, defeating Coco Gauff in the fourth round at both the All England Club and the US Open.

“I’ve reached a point in my career where I’m not afraid of any result or any tournament,” Navarro said on the court after his victory on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old Fritz, who is seeded 12th, ousted fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4 and 7-6 (3) to claim his first victory in the fifth Grand Slam quarterfinal of his career.

“I’ve seen a lot of quarterfinals over the last few years,” Fritz said in an on-court interview. “Today it just felt different. I really felt like it was time to take a step forward. I mean, it’s only fitting that I do it here on this court at the Open.”

In the semifinals on Friday, he will face Grigor Dimitrov (number 9) or Tiafoe (number 20). If it is Tiafoe, it would be the first all-American semifinal at a Grand Slam tournament since Andre Agassi’s victory over Robby Ginepri at the 2005 US Open.

By many statistics, Fritz is the most successful U.S. singles player since Andy Roddick, the last American to win a Grand Slam tournament at the 2003 U.S. Open: by ranking (career-best No. 5 last year). By Grand Slam results (five quarterfinals are the most an American has reached in 15 years). By most prestigious title: Indian Wells, considered by many to be tennis’ fifth major, in 2022.

Fritz can add another with a win in his next match: He would be the first American to make it to a Grand Slam final since Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009.
