‘Everything is gone’: Family of six left homeless after fire destroys Lauderhill home – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

LAUDERHILL, FLA. (WSVN) – A family of six was left homeless after a fire in a Lauderhill neighborhood.

Lauderhill Fire Department rescue crews arrived at the scene of the fire in the 4400 block of 14th Street shortly before 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

One of the homeless victims described the moment he realized his house was on fire.

“I remember my sister screaming ‘fire, fire’ in the room,” he said. “I came in and saw a huge fire.”

The man said he and other family members tried in vain to extinguish the flames.

“We just tried to get water and throw it out, but there was too much smoke so we had to get out,” he said.

When the family left the house, they realized the extent of the fire.

“I go outside, see there’s smoke. They’re right in front of the car and within about 10 minutes the house is in flames,” said another family member.

Thick black smoke shot out of the roof as desperate family members watched nearby

As the sun rose, the damage became even more visible. Cameras showed burnt beds and soot-covered windows.

Because of the fire, this family was left with only the clothes on their backs.

“Everything, whether it’s their belongings, their personal items, photos, memories that they can never get back, everything is gone,” said a family member.

American Red Cross volunteers are assisting the family while the fire remains under investigation.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses. If you would like to donate, click here.
