Family home destroyed by one of seven tornadoes associated with Tropical Storm Debby

EDISTO ISLAND, SC (WCSC/Gray News) – A South Carolina community is reeling after two tornadoes touched down, causing irreparable damage to area residents.

The National Weather Service confirmed that tornadoes from Tropical Storm Debby touched down in Moncks Corner and Edisto Island.

According to officials, the first tornado struck on Edisto Island and remained on the ground for about 10 minutes. It was classified as EF-1, with estimated peak sustained winds of 97 mph.

The tornado moved ashore from the ocean near the intersection of Highway 174 and Palmetto Boulevard and traveled approximately 2.89 miles.

Edisto Beach resident Tatum McDonald said he was afraid of the tornado’s howling winds.

“The wind was crazy; I didn’t know what was going to happen,” he said.

The strong winds caused damage to many beachfront homes and local business buildings. One home was particularly badly hit by the tornado.

Wayne Williams and his family have lived in their home on Edisto Island, near Fishing Creek Drive, for about six years.

Williams said the storms left them unsure where to begin rebuilding.

“Welcome to Edisto,” said Williams. “The house is completely destroyed. We have nothing left.”

The damage is even greater for the Williams, as their house is now under inches of water and valuables, clothing and personal belongings are ruined.

“My two granddaughters learned to crawl in this house,” said Williams. “The boys and my oldest granddaughter really enjoyed it down here, too.”

The Williams are dealing with the tragedy positively and say they will rebuild their house, which they have named “The Marshmallow,” and create new memories.

The tornadoes that moved across Edisto Island and Moncks Corner were two of seven Debby-related tornadoes that made landfall during the week, according to the NWS.

According to officials, the Williams’ house was one of three homes on Edisto Island that lost their roofs in the storm.

The other tornadoes touched down near Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island, West Ashley, and Lady’s Island. Authorities reported no serious damage or injuries from the other tornadoes.
