Fire causes 0,000 in damage to waterfront home in Egg Harbor, Door County

Firefighters from nine Door County departments and three from outside the county were called to fight the fire in the 6,800-square-foot home

EGG HARBOR – Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of a fire that caused an estimated $900,000 in damage to a waterfront home Saturday afternoon. Nine Door County fire departments, as well as firefighters from three departments outside the county, were called to extinguish the blaze.

According to a press release from the Egg Harbor Fire Department, the department was called at 2:51 p.m. to a fire on the roof of the single-family home at 8213 White Cliff Road on the Green Bay shore, about a half-mile north of Harbor Drive.

The Auto-Aid system paged units from northern Door County, and shortly thereafter the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was upgraded to second and then third alert levels, prompting resources from MABAS departments in Kewaunee and Brown counties.

The Egg Harbor crew arrived within minutes to find thick smoke coming from the second floor eaves of the two-story home. Firefighters aggressively fought the fire from the inside, but it breached the roof area. All crews were then forced out of the building and an aerial water spray was used to extinguish most of the fire.

The firefighters then re-entered the building, where the fire was still burning in the attic. They opened ceilings and walls to get to the hidden fire. By 4:50 p.m. the fire was considered under control, and by 10:13 p.m. all firefighters had left the scene.

Approximately 50,000 gallons of water were used to fight the fire. The Gibraltar and Sister Bay/Liberty Grove fire departments set up a refill station at the Egg Harbor Marina to supply water to fire engines.

Neither the residents of the house nor firefighters or rescue personnel were injured. The cause of the fire was still being investigated by the Egg Harbor Fire Department with the assistance of the Wisconsin State Fire Marshal’s Office as of Tuesday evening.

The Egg Harbor department’s press release said the estimated damage was about $900,000. Door County records show the property’s market value was estimated at $3.9 million.

In addition to the Egg Harbor Fire Department, the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove, Ephraim, Gibraltar, Baileys Harbor, Jacksonport, Sturgeon Bay, Southern Door, Naswaupee and Brussels-Union-Gardner (BUG) fire departments from Door County responded, as did the Algoma Fire Department from Kewaunee County and the New Franken and Howard fire departments from Brown County. Also responding were Door County EMS, Door County Sheriff’s Office, Baileys Harbor Constable, Gibraltar Police, Gibraltar Town Maintenance and the Door County MABAS Incident Response Team.
