NATCHEZ – An Adams County family lost everything Thursday night when their home at 87 Gaynor Road caught fire.

No one was injured, said Natchez Fire Chief Robert Arrington. However, the house was completely destroyed. Arrington said when the first call came into his department at around 9:30 p.m., it reported that there were two children in the house. That turned out to be false, Arrington said.

“When we arrived, there was no one in the building,” he said. “We had problems with the water. The house was in a remote area, far from water, and the water was already pretty bad when we arrived.”

The fire department responded with two fire trucks, each loaded with 1,000 gallons of water. However, firefighters had to drive more than a mile to a hydrant to fill us with water. And the water pressure at the hydrant was not enough to fill the fire truck quickly.

“There are at least two trucks on every structure fire. This was an incredibly long trip. In the city, we have a hydrant on every block, but we had to drive more than a mile to get to a hydrant, and the water pressure is not as high as in the city. The city has really good water pressure, which benefits us because the amount of water they put out fills the trucks quickly. Some hydrants in the county have comparable pressure to the city, but this one did not,” Arrington said.

Although the cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined, Arrington said the resident of the home told him there were electrical problems in part of the house.

“She saw sparks coming from an electrical outlet and believes that was the trigger,” he said.
