FL ranking improves on the 2024 list

Last year, Florida made it onto financial services provider WalletHub’s list of the ten most livable states in the USA. And this year, Florida has climbed the rankings – into the top five.

“When deciding where to move, you should first consider financial factors such as cost of living, property prices and job availability,” WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe said in the study.

“However, many states have strong economies, so you should also consider a variety of other factors, such as how where you live affects your health and safety and whether you have adequate access to activities you enjoy. If you have children, a robust education system is also critical.”

It makes sense that Florida is at the top of WalletHub’s list, as Florida made the company’s top 15 states with the best education systems just last month and also made the list of the 10 states with the best economies in the US in June.

Here’s where Florida ranks on WalletHub’s 2024 Most Livable States list and how it compares to last year’s rankings.

Which US state is best to live in?

To find the best U.S. states to live in, WalletHub compared each state based on more than 50 criteria in five categories: affordability, economy, education and health, quality of life and safety.

According to WalletHub’s study, Massachusetts is the most livable US state for the second year in a row.

This year, Florida follows in second place. In 2023, Florida took sixth place.

In 2023, Florida performed poorly in categories such as health care quality, home insurance crisis, high housing costs, average weekly work hours, and is the state with the highest inflation rate, which is why it could not rank higher than sixth. However, it dominated in the number of restaurants per capita and low unemployment rate.

Florida continues to rank at the top of the “worst” lists in the categories “housing costs” and “percent of insured residents.”

Here is WalletHub’s list of the 10 most livable US states for 2024:

  1. Massachusetts
  2. Florida
  3. New Jersey
  4. Utah
  5. New Hampshire
  6. Idaho
  7. Pennsylvania
  8. Wisconsin
  9. new York
  10. Wyoming

Why is Florida one of the most livable states?

Florida took second place primarily because of its economy. Florida also ranked seventh on WalletHub’s recent list of U.S. states with the best economy.

“Florida has the second-best quality of life and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country (just 2.9%). The state also has the sixth-highest number of jobs per capita,” the study says.

“In addition, the city has the seventh lowest tax rates and the sixth highest median household income growth, making it a great place to build and grow wealth.”

Florida’s abundance of entertainment and recreational opportunities as well as the state’s safety ranking also gave the state a top spot.

“And to top it all off, Florida is a fairly safe state. It has the ninth-most police officers per capita, which has contributed to the 13th-lowest violent crime rate and the 15th-lowest property crime rate,” the study said.

Cost of living: Which cities in Florida have the lowest and highest costs of living?

In which state are apartments the most expensive?

The state with the highest housing costs on this list is California. California also topped WalletHub’s “States with the Highest Housing Costs” category last year, and Florida ranked fifth for the highest housing costs, behind Hawaii, Nevada, and Oregon.

This year’s top five list for housing costs includes the same five states as last year, in almost exactly the same order.

According to Zillow, the average home value in Florida is $399,130, up 1.8% year over year (from July 2023 to July 2024). This time last year, the average home value in Florida was about $390,052.

In case you’re wondering, according to Zillow, the median home value in California is $784,989, up 6% over the past year (from July 2023 to July 2024). This time last year, the median home value in California was about $741,789.

These are the five states with the highest housing costs, according to WalletHub:

  5. Florida
