Football, Fútbol, Food: College football is back!

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – In this edition of FFF: College football is FINALLY back, United States Soccer has a new coach, and we remember Ed Daniels at Clancy’s.

FOOTBALL

College football is here. I know, I know, it’s only Week 0 and the roster isn’t that impressive.

But that’s real football! No regular players play a series and then sit on the sidelines for the rest of the game.

When Georgia Tech and Florida State face off in Dublin, Ireland at 11 a.m. on Saturday, the official rankings will be at stake.

The College Football Playoff also begins this year. The Seminoles want to be there and will therefore give everything against the Yellow Jackets.

The remaining games on Saturday: Montana State in New Mexico, SMU in Nevada and Delaware State in Hawaii.

Like I said, no need to panic, but I’ll be sitting in front of the TV all day because college football is back.

FOOTBALL

The US men’s national team reportedly has a new coach: his name is Mauricio Pochettino.

“Poch” has coached some of the biggest clubs in the world, including Chelsea, Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain.

Pochettino replaces Greg Berhalter. This summer, the USA failed in the group stage of the Copa America on American soil. It would be the last tournament that Berhalter would manage for the national team.

Pochettino was considered a possible candidate to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager, so he is a man in demand. Fortunately for the USA, they got him first.

Pochettino was brought in to strengthen and provide stability to the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup in America, and so far the team seems to be heading in the right direction.

EAT

I made no secret of it in my FFF post: Clancy’s is my favorite restaurant.

Ed Daniels knew this. At Saints minicamp in June, Ed came up to me and wanted to know all about Clancy’s.

He treated Clancy’s like a holy Sunday. He took notes as I explained everything to him, including reservations, what to order, and where to sit.

Yes, Ed worked at another network, but I had a lot of respect for him. He was a lot like me, conscientious and relentless. There are a lot of people in the television business who run on autopilot, do an eight-hour shift and call it a day. Ed is the complete opposite.

He wanted to celebrate his birthday there. Ed and I actually have the same birthday, July 21st.

This year, July 21st fell on a Sunday and Clancy’s is closed, so on Saturday, July 20th, my crew sat in the main seating area downstairs at Clancy’s.

Halfway through the meal, I went to the bar to say hello to legendary bartender Garth. As I rounded the corner past the bar, Ed and his wife Robin were standing there with another couple.

When my eyes met, he had the biggest grin on his face. Thanks to those precise notes, he got a great table at Clancy’s and the group ordered flawlessly.

Ed told me he was leaving for California with Robin in a few days. I told him, “I’ll be there, see you soon.”

I never saw Ed again. A life taken before it was time to go.

I will miss Ed for so many reasons, but I will always remember that smile at Clancy’s.
