Former Pistons guard Derrick Rose announces retirement

Detroit — Derrick Rose, who was named NBA MVP with the Chicago Bulls in 2011 and later played parts of two seasons with the Detroit Pistons, announced his retirement Thursday morning.

Rose made his announcement in a social media post on Instagram. He also took out an ad in every local newspaper, including The Detroit News, in the six cities he played in during his 16-year career. The full-page ad – “Thank you, my first love” – was a love message to the sport of basketball, highlighting his journey from his hometown of Chicago to a glittering career in the NBA.

“You showed me new places and cultures that a kid from Chicago could never have imagined,” Rose wrote. “You taught me that every loss is a lesson and every victory is a reason to be thankful… You gave me a gift, our time together, that I will cherish for the rest of my life. You told me it was OK to say goodbye and assured me that you would always be a part of me, no matter where life takes me.”

Rose began his career in 2008 as the Chicago Bulls’ No. 1 pick. After a brilliant high school and college career at Simeon Career Academy and the University of Memphis, he was one of the most promising talents of the 2000s.

After being named Rookie of the Year in 2009, Rose quickly established himself as one of the league’s best and most exciting players. From 2008 to 2016, he led the Bulls to their most successful post-Michael Jordan era. Rose’s best year was the 2010-11 season, when he was named league MVP and led the Bulls to a 62-20 league record and a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Unfortunately, Rose’s career began to go downhill the following season after battling a series of injuries during the regular season. In the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, Rose suffered a torn ACL in his left knee, which horribly affected his career.

The Bulls traded Rose to the New York Knicks in June 2016. From there, the former three-time All-Star made various stops in the league, playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2018-2019), Minnesota Timberwolves (2018-2019) and Memphis Grizzlies (2023-2024).

After a brief stint with the Timberwolves, Rose signed with the Pistons as a free agent at the start of the 2019–20 season. He played a season and a half with the Pistons and experienced a slight resurgence in his play, averaging 17.2 points and 5.2 assists in 65 games.
