Georgia’s win over Kentucky should be nothing new to Bulldog fans

Georgia’s win over Kentucky should be nothing new to Bulldog fans

The Georgia Bulldogs’ one-point victory over the unranked Wildcats certainly scared fans, but this isn’t the first time.

The Georgia Bulldogs earned a narrow victory over the unranked Kentucky Wildcats last night, winning their first SEC duel of the 2024 season and heading into the off week with a perfect 3-0 record.

Before the game, Georgia was the favorite to dominate the Wildcats on their home court by more than 20 points. However, things didn’t go according to plan, as the Dawgs won by the smallest possible margin and trailed for most of the game. With such a poor performance on the road, many fans and pundits have begun to raise major concerns about the Bulldogs’ 2024 season. However, Saturday’s scare isn’t exactly the first time we’ve seen Georgia struggle in the regular season. In fact, regular season scares have become a regular part of Georgia’s schedule over the past three years.

The first major “scare” moment occurred during the Bulldogs’ 2022 national championship season when the Dawgs traveled to Missouri. Georgia entered the game undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation, while Missouri was unranked with multiple losses. Despite leading by nearly 30 points, the Bulldogs trailed by two in the fourth quarter and faced a catastrophic upset. The tide eventually turned for the team, however, as 14 unanswered points propelled Georgia past the Tigers on the road. The Dawgs scored 40 points in each of their next three games, holding their opponents to an average of 10 points per game.

The second example occurred during the 2023 season, when the Bulldogs traveled to Auburn as 14.5-point favorites against the unranked Tigers. A blowout win for the Dawgs would not be enough, however, as Auburn led for most of the game, at times holding a lead of as much as 10 points. But once again, the Dawgs came back (thanks to help from Brock Bowers) and eventually emerged victorious 27-20. The following week, the Bulldogs’ offense was able to knock 50 points off the 20th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats and ultimately finish the regular season undefeated.

The general trend over the last three seasons seems to be that there is at least one game on Georgia’s schedule where the Dawgs have a completely out-of-character performance and almost pull off a huge upset. The other trend of these puzzling games is that they all happen within the first five games of the season, all are on the road, and all are against SEC opponents. One trend that may give Georgia fans some hope, however, is that the Bulldogs often have one of their better performances of the season after these games. The Bulldogs’ next game is, of course, on the road against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
