Giants place starting pitcher Robbie Ray and Jordan Hicks on the injured list

MILWAUKEE – The San Francisco Giants pitching staff suffered some major setbacks on Tuesday: Left-hander Robbie Ray and right-hander Jordan Hicks were placed on the 15-day injured list.

Ray has a strained left thigh and Hicks has inflammation of the right shoulder. Ray was placed on the injured list retroactively to Monday.

Ray started the Giants’ 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, but had to leave the field before the fourth inning due to a strained hamstring.

“I think he caught it at the right time and didn’t try to overdo it, but thighs are thighs,” San Francisco manager Bob Melvin said before the Giants’ Tuesday night game against the Milwaukee Brewers. “You’re probably going to be out for at least a couple of weeks.”

Melvin said Hicks has been struggling with shoulder problems for some time.

Hicks, who signed a four-year, $44 million contract with the Giants in the offseason, began the year in San Francisco’s rotation after previously working primarily as a reliever, returning to the bullpen earlier this summer.

“He’s had some problems with his shoulder,” Melvin said. “Since he’s been in the bullpen, it just hasn’t been responding properly. He pitched one game and the next day it was a little stiff and (He is) unavailable. It’s just reached a point where we have to get it right. It’s probably going to take some time on the injured list to get it completely right. Hopefully he’ll be much better after that. He’s been dealing with this for some time now.”

Hicks has a record of 4-7 with a 3.90 ERA in 28 appearances this season, including 20 starts.

Ray, who won the 2021 AL Cy Young Award as a pitcher for Toronto, is 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA in seven starts since returning from Tommy John surgery a month ago. He underwent the surgery in May 2023 and pitched in just one game last year.

This season he has struck out 43 batters in 30 innings.

In other action Tuesday, the Giants recalled right-handers Austin Warren and Landen Roupp from Triple-A Sacramento and claimed catcher Jakson Reetz off the waivers list and sent him directly to Sacramento.
