Grey’s Anatomy has officially returned for season 21 and will see the return of old faces and the loss of a regular player.

The latest premiere of the longest-running US medical drama was dedicated to Stephanie Leifer, and while casual fans of the long-running medical drama may not know who she is, the tribute was a touching moment, as Leifer played a crucial role in the show’s continued success.

Leifer died of cancer in June at the age of 56. She was responsible for the show as program manager Grey’s Anatomy while working at ABC – the US network that airs the show – and ABC Signature, the company that produces it. She worked at ABC for 28 years until her departure in 2022.

Grey’s AnatomyThe showrunner and executive producer of “Meg Marinis” was asked about the dedication in an interview about the episode. Marinis, who started as a host on “Grey’s Anatomy,” worked with Leifer for more than 15 years and described her former collaborator as “incredible.”

In conversation with deadlineMarinis said: “Stephanie Leifer was an incredible person and dedicated advocate Grays.

“She really believed in us from the start and supported our creative vision.

“I started my career as an assistant delivering something Grays Scripts were sent to her office and I remember her door was always open. She encouraged writers and participated in several Grays Milestone events. It was a heartbreaking loss for this family.”

In 2019 Grey’s Anatomy changed U.S. television history and became the longest-running prime-time medical drama in the U.S., overtaking the previous winner. HE.

HEwhich starred Anthony Edwards, George Clooney and Julianne Margulies and ran for 15 seasons between 1994 and 2009. The overall record is held by BBC series Accidentwhich has been broadcast in the UK since 1986.

The Anatomy of the GreysThe series’ former leading lady Ellen Pompeo made the shocking decision to leave the show in 2021, stating: “I am eternally grateful and humbled for the love and support you have given me, Meredith Gray and the show throughout its 19 seasons for a long time!”

Pompeo hasn’t given up on the show entirely, however, as she returned for a handful of episodes during the show’s 20th season and will do so again this season. She was reduced from a series regular to a recurring character.

She also remains an executive producer on the series and continues to narrate the opening and closing comments of each episode.
