Here’s how each state voted for Trump and Clinton

Votes are being counted in the 2024 U.S. presidential election and some are looking to past races to get a sense of how the race might turn out.

The 2016 election was the first general election in which now-former President Donald Trump ran as a major party nominee, defeating then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Trump won the Electoral College with 306 electoral votes but lost the popular vote by nearly 2.9 million votes.

The result was a shock, as Clinton was considered the heavy favorite to win the White House.

“It was a bit of a traumatic election,” Anna Moody, a Democratic voter in Santa Clarita, California, told USA TODAY in an interview on Tuesday. “I still remember when all the results came in.”

Here is the 2016 Electoral College map.
