How did “Hacks” win the Emmy?

How did “Hacks” win the Emmy?

We learned a lot at the Emmys on Sunday night. Jean Smart remains undefeated. Jodie Foster is halfway to the EGOT. And quite a few people wondered if a TV series can really be a comedy if you burst into tears at the end of almost every episode?

I’m Glenn Whipp, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and host of The Envelope’s Monday morning Emmys newsletter. I’m tired, but I feel stronger than the Dodgers’ rotation. Let’s recap the news.

How did “Hacks” beat “The Bear” for the comedy series Emmy Awards?

Hosts Dan and Eugene Levy immediately addressed the one topic that was on everyone’s minds Sunday night at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards.

“I know some of you may be expecting us to make a joke about whether Bear is really a comedy… but in the true spirit of Bear, we’re not going to make any jokes,” Eugene Levy said during the opening monologue.

And who would have thought? So many Emmy voters agreed with the general sentiment, “Yeah, ‘The Bear’ is great… but it’s not a real comedy,” that they gave the night’s final award, best comedy series, to “Hacks,” a show that has, you know, real jokes and humor and so on. (Again, there’s plenty of drama here, but it’s not as emotionally draining as what you see in “The Bear.”)

But there was more to it than that, as I noted in this column explaining how “Hacks” pulled off the biggest surprise of the night. I also rounded up the best and weirdest moments of the ceremony. Do you have any favorites?

Lamorne Morris goes to the Emmys – and wins!

The Times’ senior television reporter Yvonne Villarreal chose the right Emmy nominee to accompany on Sunday. She spent the day with Lamorne Morris, nominated for his memorable role as a conscientious deputy sheriff in “Fargo.” Morris ended up winning an Emmy on his first try.

“Every actor dreams of years like this,” he told Yvonne. “I just have to keep my head down a little bit and not get too high or too low – that’s what LeBron James always says when he talks about the course of a season. The journey you’re on, the things you can do. Of course you want to grow and develop, but you have to keep the same energy that got you there.”

Check out the story for many reasons, not just the adorable photos of Morris’s four-year-old daughter, Lily. OK, I’ll insert one here. I can’t resist.

Beyond the complete Emmy coverage

Is there such a thing as “more than complete”? I don’t know. It’s late and I gave 101% today. May I just direct you to this landing page, which includes links to stories about John Leguizamo’s passionate (and funny) speech about diversity, Amy Kaufman’s questions to the red carpet crowd about “The Bears'” comedic skills, and the best red carpet fashion trends from yesterday’s ceremony.

That’s it. I hope you had the time of your life.
