Is Smell-O-Vision finally ready for prime time?

Welcome to the Food Tech News Show!

This week Mike and Carlos discuss the following stories:

Osmo is trying to digitize the world of smells and finally create Smell-O-Vision with the help of AI

The company’s Principal Odor Map (POM), created using Osmo’s model, outperformed human subjects in predicting the consensus odor of molecules. This represents a significant advance in smell science and shows that AI can, in many cases, predict odors based on molecular structure better than individual human experts.

How would you like a nice glass of 2D printed oat milk?

This week, Milkadamia, known for its range of macadamia milks, launched its first oat milk. But it’s not just any oat milk; the company is introducing Flat Pack Oat Milk, printed sheets of plant-based milk that can be soaked in water overnight or blended into an instant drink.

According to the company, these sheets are made by printing oat milk paste onto flat sheets using a proprietary 2D printing process. Each pack contains eight of these lightweight sheets, reducing both packaging and weight.

Anova informs the community that its app will require a subscription – and it doesn’t go well

Last week, Anova CEO Steve Svajian announced that the company will begin charging a subscription fee for new users of its sous vide circulator app on August 21, 2024. However, existing users who downloaded the app and created an account before that date will not be affected by the change. These users will continue to have access to all of the app’s features for free.

Svajian explained that the decision to introduce a subscription fee was due to the fact that “every connected chef costs us money,” a cost that has become significant as the number of connected chefs now numbers in the “hundreds of millions.” The new Anova Sous Vide subscription will cost $1.99 per month or $9.99 per year.

Not surprisingly, the news sparked anger among Anova users.
