Ja’Marr Chase praises wide receiver Jermaine Burton of the Cincinnati Bengals

Ja’Marr Chase praises wide receiver Jermaine Burton of the Cincinnati Bengals

CINCINNATI — Will Jermaine Burton play a bigger role on offense this week?

Ja’Marr Chase hinted at that possibility on Thursday. The Bengals are expected to be without star wide receiver Tee Higgins, which could pave the way for Burton to take the field.

The rookie played four snaps and ran one route in Cincinnati’s loss to New England in Week 1.

Chase praised Burton’s growth in recent weeks.

“I feel like Jermaine has made a huge leap in just knowing his plays, knowing where he needs to be and what he’s being used for,” Chase told reporters.

The Bengals drafted Burton in the third round (80th overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft. He had an impressive preseason when he was on the field, scoring two of Cincinnati’s three offensive touchdowns, but made most of his plays against third-rounders.

“He made some really good plays at the end,” Burrow said after the Bengals’ season opener against the Buccaneers. “He just has to keep working hard, learn his playbook and continue to develop as a player and as a person. His future is bright and he just has to keep working hard.”

This quote is a month old, but it is consistent with what Chase praised Burton for on Thursday.

“It’s really just about the playbook. Knowing where he needs to go, what he needs to do,” Chase said. “Knowing his role on offense is the most important thing and finally getting a chance. There’s no bigger opportunity than right now.”

The “right now” means Burton could play a bigger role on offense this week. The Bengals could certainly use another offensive tackle against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
