Jordan Love – Player Selection

Jordan Love – Player Selection

Since Jordan Love has already played a full year in the league, we expect Matt LaFleur to rely more on the Green Bay Packers quarterback in the Packers’ season opener in San Paulo.

At this point last season, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love was one of the biggest question marks heading into Week 1.

Fast forward a season — which included a red-hot run in the second half of the schedule and a playoff win — and Love appears to be the answer to the Cheeseheads’ prayers following Rodgers’ departure. At least they’re paying him accordingly, signing Love to a four-year, $220 million contract.

Love can prove he’s worth all those zeros in Week 1 when the Packers travel to Brazil to play the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night. I go over the player markets for Green Bay’s quarterback and give my best NFL picks for September 6.

My analysis

This international showcase has one of the highest first week point totals, flirting with 50 points. We have two capable offenses and two defenses under new coordinators, with the stopping units likely to go through growing pains in the first few weeks of the schedule.

A potential shootout means the Green Bay Packers will have to make a lot of passes. And why not? They’re not paying Jordan Love to pass the ball.

Last season, it took a while for this young group to gel together, but things started to pick up in mid-November, with Love completing 22-plus passes in six of the final eight regular-season games.

The Packers have plenty of options in the air attack. While there is no true WR1, Green Bay has the league’s strongest receiver group and had eight different players lead the team in yards in a single game in 2023. They also signed pass-catching running back Josh Jacobs in the offseason.

The 2024 playbook puts more faith in Love than last year’s system, which had the 19th-highest rate. Matt LaFleur will pass the ball to Love more often, especially in Week 1, when the rushing attack is banged up and points are especially important.

The Philadelphia Eagles were one of the worst pass defenses in 2023, and while Philadelphia is expected to improve, there are plenty of new faces and playbook pages. This stopping unit is now under new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, whose tricky stealth schemes take time to learn.

Philly allowed the second-most completions per game (24.8) and watched opposing passers complete nearly 65% of their shots. This secondary is asking veterans to get back to form and pushing rookies to shine in their first taste of the pros.

Love’s player projections are pretty much right on his 22.5 O/U completion total against Philly. Some early prop markets had the over-22.5 completions valued at +105, with over-money increasing the win to where it is now.

With Love’s increased involvement and a potential shootout in Sao Paulo, we could expect the Packers quarterback to attempt more than 37 throws in Week 1. Given that workload, sinking 23 of those passes shouldn’t be a problem.

Jordan Love Over 1.5 touchdown passes
Eagles team total over 26.5
Josh Jacobs anytime touchdown

Love will hit the ground running in Week 1, possibly in a shootout. He has thrown at least two touchdowns in 10 of his last 11 games, including the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s offense has been revamped under new OC Kellen Moore and can take advantage of the Packers’ revamped defense for 28+ points.

Jacobs is the only running back who isn’t injured heading into Week 1. With AJ Dillon out, MarShawn Lloyd dealing with a hamstring injury, and Emmanuel Wilson limited by a hip injury, Jacobs is getting all the action – and offense – in the red zone.
