Kamala Harris criticizes Trump’s economic plans and praises McDonald’s appearance

WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris confirmed again Wednesday that she once worked at McDonald’s, contradicting former President Donald Trump, who repeatedly claimed she never worked there.

In an interview with Harris, MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle said: “I just want to ask you, whether you want to do this or not: Have you ever in your life been served two beef patties with special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions -“

“On a sesame seed bun?” Harris said in unison with Ruhle.

Then she added, “I worked” at McDonald’s.

“One reason I even talk about having worked at McDonald’s is because there are people in our country who work at McDonald’s and are trying to support a family,” she said. “I worked there as a student.”

“I think part of the differences between me and my opponent is our perspective on the needs of the American people and what our responsibility is to meet those needs,” she added.

The Trump campaign responded to Harris’ interview on Wednesday night by criticizing both her performance and her economic record under the Biden administration.

Trump has said he would eliminate all taxes on overtime pay, but his campaign has not released details of that plan. He has also touted a proposal to eliminate taxes on tips, a measure Harris later said she supported.

Trump also insisted that Harris’ anecdote about her work at the fast-food chain was a “made-up story.”

In campaign speeches, Harris often describes her middle-class background and how this has shaped her worldview.

During the interview on Wednesday, Harris said, “My mother raised my sister and me. She worked hard and saved. When I was a teenager, she was able to buy her first home. And you know, for too many people in our country today, it’s hard to own a home.”

“The days of everyone believing they could actually live the American dream are over. So part of my vision for the economy is that we address some of the everyday challenges that people face and address them with common sense solutions, like affordable housing,” she added.

An NBC News poll this month found that 50 percent of registered voters believed Trump could handle the economy better, while 41 percent chose Harris. The results were outside the 3.1 percentage point margin of error.
