Kendrick Lamar’s new song “Watch the Party Die”

Kendrick Lamar has officially released a new track on his Instagram, reportedly titled “Watch the Party Die.”

The five-minute song is his first since “Not Like Us” and comes shortly after his recent announcement as the headliner of the Super Bowl Halftime Show. In the days following the news, rap fans were divided over the choice of Kendrick’s performance. Some argued that Lil Wayne should have been chosen because he is from New Orleans, the host city of this year’s Super Bowl. Stars like Nicki Minaj championed Weezy and commented on his towering influence. Others defended Kendrick, saying that his successful year and reputation as a Pulitzer Prize-winning lyricist made him perfect for the show. The halftime show announcement polarized the internet and sparked debate among the fan community.

With a single photo of a pair of black Air Force 1s on Instagram, fans seem to think the Drake feud isn’t over yet. Kendrick raps, “I just beat the man up, that’s good for everybody / It’s love but tough love, sometimes you gotta use force.” As for the cover of a pair of old, battered AF1s, fans believe it’s a reference to Drake’s “Push Ups” track, which pokes fun at Kendrick’s shoe size. Kendrick can be heard referencing Terrace Martin and Christian rapper Lecra, as well as a reference to DJ Akademiks: “The radio personality who spread propaganda for salary / Let me know when they come up as victims.”
