A golden retriever who became a college football icon has died.

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit announced Thursday that his beloved dog Ben, a constant companion on his weekly football trips across the United States, died of cancer that had spread to his organs.

“This is really hard to write, but so many of you loved and cared about Ben that I wanted to let you know,” he wrote on X. “I’ve had dogs my whole life, but Ben was one one. That’s what he was.” smart, loving, gentle, patient, curious and warm to everyone. Always a big smile and a gentle wag of the tail. He and I were able to communicate.”

“He and I got along and supported each other. He was at home with me more than anyone else and traveled with me to work. Such a relaxed companion. Tough day – but it will live in all of us forever. God, please bless his majestic soul and thank you for bringing him into my life over the last 10 years – a true blessing. I love you, Ben.”

Ben, a big, fluffy golden, has enjoyed an increasing presence on social media and ESPN/ABC broadcasts in recent years.

In 2023, he received emotional support animal certification and began accompanying his father on full-time road trips.

He often appeared on the field with his own media badge, interacted with other live mascots, hung out in locker rooms and team rooms, and attended production meetings with his father.

But his main job was to provide Herbstreit with a taste of home while he was on the road working Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football games, Saturday’s “College GameDay” on ESPN and Saturday night’s primetime game on ABC .

Herbstreit shared earlier this week that he had undergone chemo injections to slow the cancer, which left him unable to move his back legs and lost his appetite. Other treatments, such as a vitamin C infusion, were also unsuccessful.

“I am so grateful for ALL the love that has been shown to him over the last few years,” Kirk wrote. “One of the hardest things I’ve been through in my life. Ben is my best friend and companion. I love him with all my heart.”
