What you should know about Nevada

Nevada, whose economy relies largely on tourism and hospitality around Las Vegas, is home to a significant working-class population. Both Trump and Harris announced No taxes on tips Earlier this year, Nevada took action to improve social policies, underscoring the dominance of service industry workers in the Silver State.

Although no Republican presidential candidate has won in Nevada since 2004, the Democrats’ lead has narrowed in recent years. The Silver State’s economy, which relies on the hospitality industry, was hit hardest by pandemic-related shutdowns in 2020, leading to a much slower recovery than other states and leading to frustration with Democratic-led policies.

In 2022, Republicans flipped the governor’s mansion and the state was home to the closest Senate race in the country, suggesting it could be of great importance to Republicans even at the presidential level in 2024. But Nevada, a state with high population turnover, has presented electoral difficulties in the past. And the largest bloc of voters — more than 30% of voters — are registered as nonpartisan in 2024.
