Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes overcame a late injury scare as his team beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-24 in overtime to extend their undefeated start to the season.

Mahomes threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, while running back Kareem Hunt scored a game-winning two-yard touchdown to lift the home Chiefs to 8-0.

Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl winner, twisted his ankle in a win over the Las Vegas Raiders last week and was left with a limp again after escaping pressure to send a touchdown pass to Samaje Perine, leading the Chiefs brought the score to 17:17 early in the fourth quarter.

The 29-year-old needed help getting to the sideline, but after treatment he returned to hit DeAndre Hopkins with a five-yard touchdown pass that gave the defending Super Bowl champions four minutes, 17 seconds left ended with a 24:17 lead.

Tampa Bay responded as quarterback Baker Mayfield controlled the game, leading to a Ryan Miller touchdown, and when the Bucs decided against a two-point conversion and the lead, the extra point kick made it 24-24 .

Kansas City’s final attempt of regulation time yielded nothing, but they got the ball and started overtime, with Mahomes leading them to the game-winning score as the Bucs suffered a fourth loss in their last five games.

Mahomes downplayed his ankle injury after the game and said he expects to be ready when the Chiefs host the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

“You’re always afraid of the worst,” he said. “But once I had some time, it felt better. We have a short week ahead of us, but we’ll catch up and I’ll be good to go next week.”
