Man arrested in connection with Camden gas station break-in after foot chase with authorities

CAMDEN, SC (WIS) – A man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a burglary at a gas station after a foot pursuit with authorities.

According to the Camden Police Department (CPD), police responded to an alarm call at the BP gas station on Jefferson Davis Highway.

When officers arrived, they found the glass pane of the front door broken and open. They also found a hand truck and a safe from inside the store in the parking lot.

CPD investigators obtained video surveillance footage from inside the store showing a man wearing a black hoodie, gray shorts and black shoes using a concrete block to smash the store’s glass door and force his way into the gas station.

While inside, officials say the man unsuccessfully attempted to break into the ATM. He then reportedly retrieved the blue hand cart from his car, used it to remove a safe from the store and attempted to load it into his vehicle, but was unsuccessful.

According to police, the man then fled the scene in a white four-door Honda Accord and left the safe and the blue handcart in the parking lot.

Hours later, a CPD officer attempted to stop a similar car for a traffic violation. However, the cat’s driver stopped but continued running on foot.

CPD officers requested assistance from the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) K-9 Tracking Team and K-9 Mazie was deployed.

According to police, the sniffer dog tracked the man to an empty house on Sarsfield Avenue, where he was arrested.

The man was identified as Jermaine Perry Williams. He was charged with grand larceny and second-degree burglary.

Williams was taken to the Camden Police Department, where police said he later confessed to the break-in at the BP gas station.
