Marjorie Taylor Greene criticizes Trump ally for ‘extremely racist’ comment

Marjorie Taylor Greene described the comments made by Donald Trump’s ally Laura Loomer as “appalling and extremely racist” and called for them to be retracted.

The context

The Georgia House Republican made the remarks Wednesday on X, formerly Twitter, three days after Loomer made inflammatory remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris that invoked her Indian ancestry.

On September 8, Loomer shared a post from Harris in which the Democratic presidential candidate discussed visiting her maternal grandparents in India.

Loomer wrote: “If Kamala Harris wins, the White House will smell of curry, White House speeches will be delivered through a call center, and the American people will only be able to provide feedback through a customer satisfaction survey at the end of the phone call that no one will understand.”

What we know

Three days after Loomer wrote her post, it was shared by Greene, one of Trump’s most vocal defenders in Congress, who added: “This is appalling and extremely racist. It does not represent who we are as Republicans or MAGA. It does not represent President Trump.”

“This type of behavior should never be tolerated. Laura Loomer should remove this.”

Newsweek reached out to Laura Loomer for comment via X-direct message outside regular office hours on September 12, as well as to Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and the Donald Trump presidential campaign via email.

On Wednesday, Loomer accompanied Trump on visits to New York and Pennsylvania to mark the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. On X, she shared a photo of the former president meeting with firefighters in Lower Manhattan, who she said were “thrilled to see him.” She also traveled with Trump to the United Flight 93 memorial in Pennsylvania and the nearby Shanksville Fire Department.

United Flight 93 was the only one of the four hijacked passenger planes that failed to reach its destination on September 11. It crashed in an open field after the passengers organized a revolt.

Loomer has made controversial social media posts in the past, calling the Sept. 11 attacks an “inside job” and boasting that he is a “proud Islamophobe.” Loomer, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2020, had been banned from Twitter before the social media platform was purchased by Elon Musk.

In an X-post late Wednesday night, Loomer commented: “To the many reporters calling me and obsessively asking me to speak to them today, the answer is no.

“I’m very busy working on my stories and investigations and don’t have time to deal with your conspiracy theories. I don’t work for President Trump. In fact, I don’t work for anyone.”

Also on Wednesday, news website Semafor reported that a person “close to the Trump campaign” said they were “100 percent” concerned about the influence Loomer had on Trump.

They said: “Despite all the guardrails the Trump campaign has put in place, I don’t think it will work.”

Greene has clashed with Loomer before, posting on X in April 2023, according to a report in The New York Times that Trump is considering hiring the Florida Republican.

She said: “Laura Loomer is mentally unstable and a proven liar. She cannot be trusted.”

“She lied about me and attacked me for months simply because I supported Kevin McCarthy for speaker and after I refused to support her in the last election cycle.”

In June 2023, Loomer called Greene a “bitch” and a “DOG,” referring to her support for then-Republican Speaker McCarthy.
