Mark Vientos continues to emerge as a force in the midst of the Mets’ postseason run

Sunday afternoon’s walk-off loss was frustrating for the Mets, but there are still plenty of positives to take from the first two games of their NLDS matchup against the NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies.

The offense looked fantastic with its sustained late inning drama, and no one was more impressive than the red-hot one Mark Vientos.

The youngster has picked up right where he left off in his regular season, reaching base in four of New York’s five postseason games over the last two weeks while driving in seven runs.

Vientos’ best performance came during Sunday’s back-and-forth contest, when he became the youngest player in National League history to record three extra-base hits with two home runs and a double in a postseason game.

In the third, he put New York on the field from the starter with a two-run shot from the opposite field Cristopher Sanchezand then he came through with the latest edition of Miracle Mets magic, hitting another two-run home run to tie the game in the ninth.

“It’s pretty impressive” Carlos Mendoza said. “His ability to slow the game down just because he is aware of the situation and he continues to come through. He seems calm and in control, which was very impressive.”

Even though he’s finally getting the attention he deserves on the national stage, Vientos’ hitting power is certainly no surprise to those who have watched him all season.

After starting the year in the minors, the slugger received his first full-time opportunity in the big leagues, and it didn’t take long for him to slot into the middle of the Mets lineup.

The 24-year-old has made tremendous progress from the start of the season to now, and the team’s postseason run gives him a chance to show that on the biggest stage.

“I’m so proud of him” Brandon Nimmo said. “You can’t say enough about him, he was spectacular. He’s really developing into a great player and with his strength he’s a force and someone to always worry about.”
