PRE-GAME NOTES

Marshall is seeking its second win in as many years over the Hokies after a thrilling 24-17 victory over VT last season in Huntington.

The Thundering Herd also hopes for their third consecutive win against a Power Four opponent when they travel to storied Lane Stadium on Saturday afternoon (No. 8 Notre Dame, 2022; Virginia Tech, 2023).

There are many personal connections between the two schools, but none is more important to either than Frank Loria, a former Virginia Tech standout and member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Loria became an assistant coach at Marshall after his playing days, but was one of 75 victims of the Marshall plane crash on Nov. 14, 1970, which remains the largest sports-related aviation tragedy in history.

There is another tie between the teams on the field as former teammates and roommates of Middle Tennessee Elijah Metcalf (Marshall) and Jaylin Lane (Virginia Tech) are two of the game’s best wide receivers looking to lead their teams to victory.

ABOUT MARSHALL

Last week, Marshall’s offense managed 549 yards while three of the Herd’s quarterbacks each threw a touchdown pass – the first time that has happened in 92 years. Stone Earle And Braylon Braxton each threw two touchdown passes, while Cole Pennington threw another one.

Run back AJ Turner also finished the game with 119 yards on eight carries, including the first points of the season on an 80-yard run. Metcalf caught two touchdown passes – both from Earle – while Braxton had a Christian Fitzpatrick (4 receptions, 97 yards, TD) and Carl Chester for touchdowns in a balanced attack.

Defensive, Michael Green — a native of Williamsburg, Virginia — returns to his home state this week after posting career-highs with nine tackles and 1.5 sacks last week. Fellow defensive lineman Chris Thomas also had six tackles and two pass breakups.

Head coach Charles Huff is now in his fourth season leading the program and has compiled a record of 23-17.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH

Virginia Tech enters Saturday’s game hoping for its first win of the 2024 season after losing 34-27 in overtime on the road to Vanderbilt.

In that game, the Hokies fell behind 17-0, but then the offense found its rhythm after a 55-yard throw from Kyron Drones to Ali Jennings and took a 27-20 lead. Vanderbilt tied the game in the final two minutes before winning in overtime.

Drones threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns in the Hokies’ loss and had four different receivers with at least 60 yards – Jennings, Lane, Stephen Gosnell and Benji Gosnell.

On defense, Keli Lawson had nine tackles, while Mose Phillips III and Sam Brumfield – who also played with Metcalf at Middle Tennessee – each had seven tackles.

Virginia Tech’s defensive line is coached by former Hokies star player JC Price, who also coached at Marshall in the same role from 2012 to 2020.
