Summary

Expect the moderate trade winds to continue through Monday and then strengthen into the moderate to locally windy range beginning Monday night as the subtropical ridge strengthens north of the island. Shower activity will increase tonight through Monday as a weak low moves west across the state. There will be another brief increase in showers from Thursday to Saturday as another weak disturbance spreads along the island chain.

discussion

This morning’s satellite image shows some enhanced low clouds forming along an easterly wave about 250 miles east of Hilo, being carried by the trade winds. Expect shower activity to increase over the Eastern Isles during the evening and then across the Western Isles on Monday morning. The highest amount of rain showers occurs over the windward and mountain slopes during the night to early morning hours. A few bands of high cirrus clouds are also moving across the state today.
The latest model forecasts continue to show a weak subtropical ridge north of the Hawaiian Islands, producing moderate trade winds across the region through early Monday. A hybrid pattern of trade winds and sea breezes will continue over the next two days. Areas of sea breeze will develop along the sheltered western slopes of each island.
On Monday night, the mountain ridge in the north of the state will strengthen slightly, producing moderate to locally windy trade winds throughout the Hawaii region through Thursday. Clouds and showers will move in throughout the week, particularly in windward and mountainous areas, especially overnight into the early hours of the morning. Another trough in the easterly trade winds and a weak upper-level low could lead to another brief increase in shower activity near the Big Island beginning Thursday morning and then slowly spreading to the Western Islands Friday through Saturday.

aviation

Light to moderate trades are expected over the next few days. ISOL SHRA should favor windward and mauka locations. Sea breezes could bring some ISOL SHRA into leeward areas, with land breezes blowing at night. Brief MVFR conditions are expected in any SHRA, but VFR should generally prevail.
There are no AIRMETs in force.

marine

A cold front north of the islands will create a weaker pressure gradient upstream and this will result in persistent weak to moderate trade winds into early Monday. As the front passes northeast of the state over the next few days, high pressure will re-build over the eastern Pacific. Trading will respond by increasing again to more moderate to locally strong levels across the board by early Tuesday. A small craft warning may be required for the notoriously windy bays and channels in the east of the island until early Tuesday. Trade will slow somewhat toward the end of the week as the next cold front pushes the state’s far northeast closer to the islands and weakens the pressure gradient.
A small, strengthening mid-period swell to the north (350 degrees) that took hold yesterday will produce high chest-to-head surf across the north shore throughout the day. The arrival of a larger, medium to long duration northerly swell (350 degrees) this evening into early Monday morning will result in advisory level surf along the north facing coast. This swell and resulting surf will peak on Monday evening and then slowly decrease until midweek. The recent small, long-lasting southerly swell (180 degrees) will ease throughout the day, as will the near waist-high surf on the south coast. Surf along the west coast will remain elevated and increase through tomorrow due to the influence of the northerly swell. Eastward coastal wind waves will remain relatively low under this recent weaker trading regime. In response to the strengthening of trade, the eastern economy will recover by Tuesday.
