McAllen International Airport sees all-time record number of travelers – Rio Grande Guardian

MCALLEN, Texas – McAllen International Airport set a new travel record in July 2024 with a total of 114,694 passengers, McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos announced.

This is an increase of 8.7 percent from the previous record set in June 2024.

Total air traffic will have increased by 23 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year, with 70 percent more flights than at the same time in 2023.

“McAllen International Airport has set records in four of the last five years, but this year we have surpassed them,” said Villalobos. “We are so grateful to see more travelers flying nonstop from McAllen, especially on the new nonstop routes.”

Villalobos said three new airlines and four new nonstop routes will open from McAllen in 2024: Austin via Delta Air Lines, Mexico City via Aeromexico, Cancun via Volaris and Tampa-St. Petersburg via Allegiant Air.

McAllen Airport saw high demand for all nine nonstop flights, but especially for flights to Mexico City on Aeromexico, to Austin on Delta and to Dallas on American Airlines, Villalobos added.

Jeremy Santoscoy, McAllen’s aviation director, said all six airlines flying out of McAllen not only provide a first-class and comfortable travel experience for leisure and business travelers, but also transport their passengers to premier destinations and major hubs around the world.

He pointed out that the city of McAllen was awarded a $7.4 million grant in April of this year to improve and expand the McAllen International Airport. He said the funds could not have come at a better time.

As for the details of the improvements, Santoscoy said the airport is currently conducting studies to determine how and where the airport should be expanded.

“We are careful to consider the need and justification for responsible development,” Santoscoy said. “Our stakeholders want to ensure that any decisions related to expansion are made carefully and represent the best options for our travelers and airlines, including those in the future.”
