Mean Moose golfers begin the season with a fifth place in Cortez

ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School boys golf team began the 2024 season by participating in the Montezuma-Cortez Invitational on Thursday at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez.

The Mean Moose finished fifth with a score of 269 strokes.

Leading the way for Alamosa was Serjio Najera, who finished 16th with 85 points. Kobe Mizokami followed in 21st place with 89 points, Gibson Gillespie was 25th with 95 points and Brady Van Iwarden was 30th with 99 points.

Durango won the tournament with 228. Montezuma-Cortez finished second with 238, Durango’s second team finished third with 242, and Durango’s third team finished fourth with 249.

Telluride finished sixth with 287, Woodland Park seventh with 293 and Pagosa Springs eighth with 304.

Johnathon Smith of Pagosa won the medal with an even par 72. Drew Jepson of Durango was one stroke behind in second place.

Alamosa will next compete in the Durango Invitational on Saturday. The home tournament will be held on August 16 at Cattails Golf Course.

Season start in Del Norte and Monte Vista next week

The other two SLV boys golf teams will begin their season early next week.

Monte Vista will participate in the Swink Invitational on Monday, held at La Junta Municipal Golf Course. Both Monte Vista and Del Norte will participate in the Fowler Invitational on Tuesday at Cottonwood Links.

Both teams will also participate in the Alamosa Invitational.
