Michigan’s best football players after the loss to Texas

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Wolverines lost in the Big House for the first time since 2020 and Michigan lost its first period since the 2022 season. The maize-blues find themselves in unfamiliar territory after being dominated for 60 minutes.

The Longhorns gained 389 yards on offense, with Quinn Ewers throwing for 246 yards and three interceptions. Michigan’s defense struggled to contain the Longhorns’ strong offense. The Wolverines couldn’t get much pressure from the line on defense, and the young cornerbacks kept getting beat when Michigan didn’t put pressure on Ewers.

On offense, Davis threw for 204 yards to Warren, but most of his yards came in garbage time. Warren did throw a touchdown and two interceptions in the fourth quarter, but neither was entirely his fault.

While there isn’t much to take away from Saturday’s game, here are our Michigan football players of the game.

The speedy receiver missed a football on Saturday but made up for it with a strong fourth-quarter performance. Morgan caught a late 31-yard touchdown throw from Davis Warren. After catching just one pass last week, Morgan rebounded with five catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. If there’s a bright spot, it’s the fact that Morgan has been more involved in the offense.

It wasn’t a flawless game for the Michigan tight end. Loveland dropped a ball late in the second half when the Wolverines would have been in Texas territory. Instead, the Longhorns scored before halftime to take a 24-3 lead. But overall, Loveland was Davis Warren’s primary target. He had eight catches, the most of the game, and Loveland added another 70 yards to his season total. As we said last week, it’s clear that Loveland is Davis Warren’s primary target.

There weren’t too many positives from the Michigan defense on Saturday, but Jaishawn Barham continued to improve on his Week 1 performance. He tied the team with five solo tackles. Barham got into the backfield and got a quarterback hurry to Quinn Ewers. Barham looks like a big SEC linebacker playing in Big Ten country. As the season progresses, Barham should be a force.

The veteran safety led the Wolverines with six tackles. Texas’ receivers struggled with Michigan’s cornerbacks — who weren’t named Will Johnson. Jyaire Hill had trouble in coverage and Paige was there to clean up mistakes. It’s not ideal when the safety has to finish plays, but it’s good to have him back. In a game as important as this, it would have been better to see Paige quiet, which could mean the cornerbacks would have done a better job.

The Arkansas State transfer stayed perfect on Saturday. Zvada made both of his field goals, this time from 37 and 52 yards out. In the two back-to-back games, Zvada was arguably the player of the game for the Michigan Wolverines. It looks crystal clear that Zvada would do just that if the Wolverines need a game-winning kick from him.
