Morningside’s Garden Donates to the Food Bank of Siouxland

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Picking and cleaning up healthy produce was a hectic endeavor for several Morningside University students Monday morning.

Over the summer, students in the school’s Applied Agricultural and Food Science program tended the garden and donated to local food pantries, including Grace United Methodist Church, but on Monday, the Food Bank of Siouxland benefitted.

“I would say the best thing we have right now is our students. They’re not afraid to get their hands dirty on the job,” said Dee McKenna, education coordinator at Morningside. “They’re applying what they learn in the classroom here and fighting for a really important cause in our community. And I always say, the best harvest we have here today is our students.”

Donations included potatoes, onions, tomatoes and corn. McKenna says demand for food assistance locally has increased: one in nine families is now considered food insecure.
