Movistar Team uses new equipment at La Vuelta to celebrate Telefónica’s 100th anniversary

Different outfit + reworked lifestyle clothing from BORN

Will wear GOBIK equipment and ABUS helmets with distinctive Telefónica-inspired design

The 79th edition of the Vuelta will take place from August 17 to September 8, 2024. This is a significant moment for the Movistar Team and the Vuelta, as both celebrate Telefónica’s 100th anniversary with the final stage, which will decide the overall result. It runs along a Madrid ITT route between the company’s global headquarters, Distrito Telefónica, and the famous Gran Vía, the city’s main street, with the finish right next to the legendary Edificio Telefónica.

Telefónica’s buildings will feature on the special edition kit that the Movistar Team will wear during the Vuelta. They say gratitude is the memory of the heart and there is no better moment than the Spanish Grand Tour to thank so many generations of Telefónica employees who have created something unique and believed that the impossible is possible. Telefónica is an exciting story of continuous transformation and at the Vuelta the Movistar Team will further extend the reach of this brand with distinctive kit that lovingly reminds us of who we are, where we come from and celebrates a great future.

The new GOBIK jersey of the Movistar Team for La Vuelta celebrates 100 years of connection between people, the path chosen by Telefónica since its beginnings and which the Yecla factory follows with an unmistakable design. An example of technological advancement and innovation, united in a special garment to achieve the best professional performance in any situation. The new kit, pulled over the GOBIK Movistar Team Century model, is designed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency to save even the last watt. Fit and muscle compression are perfect, with only 110 grams and a very unique design on a white background with blue drawings that remind fans of the iconic buildings of Telefónica and the most famous places in Madrid.

The well-known ABUS helmets, both the AirBreaker and GameChanger 2.0 models, also have the design and images of the Telefónica buildings integrated on the jersey. The AirBreaker is designed with aerodynamics and weight in mind, while also ensuring optimal ventilation with its multi-speed design. The multi-position advancements help reduce drag by throwing as little physical surface area as possible against the wind, and the innovative Forced Air Cooling technology absorbs the incoming air, directs it around the head and provides a fresher feeling, even in high temperatures.

Madrid-based athleisure brand BORN will also support Telefónica’s celebrations, and both riders and staff of the Movistar Team will wear jerseys made from sustainable materials, with a design inspired by the final stage of the Vuelta and also featuring images of Telefónica’s buildings.

About Telefónica and its presence in Madrid

The Telefónica company was founded in 1924 and already in those twenties, in 1929, the building at Gran Vía 28 opened its doors. The 90-metre-high building, part of the urban plan and symbol of Madrid’s architecture, was the tallest in Europe when it opened and remained the tallest in the city for a quarter of a century. It is an architectural treasure that brought about a revolutionary change: for the first time in Spain, a metal structure was used and a pioneering method was integrated with an interior structure made of wrought iron.

Several decades later, in the 2000s, Telefónica moved its headquarters to Distrito C, a 168,000 square meter complex with 15 buildings, glass facades and extensive green spaces, later called Distrito Telefónica.

Inaugurated in 2008, the solar park was Europe’s largest at the time and one of the most important in the world. It had 16,000 photovoltaic solar panels that covered a tenth of the complex’s total energy consumption.

A big step towards the modernization of Telefónica, which Telefónica could have imagined 100 years ago and which the Movistar team will proudly showcase during the Vuelta.
