Netflix denies plagiarism allegations against ‘Squid Game’; legal battle with ‘Luck’ director Soham Shah underway |

Filmmaker Soham Shah shocked fans around the world when he accused Netflix successful Korean series’Squid Game‘ of plagiarizing his 2009 film ‘Luck.’ On Saturday morning, it was announced that the director has filed a lawsuit against the streaming giant as well as the creator of ‘Squid Game’ Hwang Dong-hyukand claimed that the concept of the series was taken from his film.
Netflix has responded to the allegations, strongly denying the accusations and saying they are “baseless.” In response to the lawsuit, the streaming giant said, “‘Squid Game’ was created and written by Hwang Dong-hyuk, and we intend to vigorously defend ourselves in this matter.”

According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Shah claims his film “Luck,” starring Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan and Shruti Haasan, is about a group of people who play deadly games in the hope of winning a jackpot. With each death of a player, the prize money increases – an element that Shah says bears striking similarities to the plot of the hit Korean web series.

The series, which was a critically acclaimed hit and swept all the major awards, also revolved around a series of contestants desperate for money who enter a competition of children’s games, but which takes a deadly turn and ends in death. The series ends with one contestant walking away with the top prize.

In his lawsuit, Shah also claimed that his film “Luck” was released in India, the United Kingdom, the United States and the United Arab Emirates in July 2009. He also claimed that Hwang Dong-hyuk stated that he wrote “Squid Game” in the same year.

Netflix and Hwang Dong-hyuk are expected to contest the allegations, with the case potentially setting the stage for a complex legal battle.
The OTT giant was recently in the news for a $170 million lawsuit filed over its Emmy-nominated show.Baby reindeer‘. Deadline reported that a federal judge has set a trial date of May 6, 2025. Fiona Harvey filed the multimillion-dollar lawsuit, claiming that the show’s stalker Martha Scott was based on her interactions with the show’s creator, writer and star Richard Gadd. A key part of the lawsuit is that “Baby Reindeer” brands the events of the show as a “true story,” which is “the biggest lie in television history,” according to the lawsuit.
