Netflix new releases: October 2024

The return of a reality TV monster sure to dominate the social media conversation; Charlie and Nick’s blossoming romance; a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the NBA courtesy of LeBron James and Anthony Edwards; an action writer’s latest gem; Tyler Perry’s first Netflix television drama and another auxiliary spy drama from Keri Russell are some of the highlights among the new films and series coming to Netflix in October.

The new season of Netflix’s reality dating show starts on October 2nd Love is blind. The seventh iteration of the main franchise – the brand has since expanded into multiple country-specific versions – will see a new group of singles making their way into the pods in the hope of finding love and their partner get married, all within a worryingly compressed period of time. The show, still touted as a “social experiment,” experienced some bad PR in recent seasons and was the subject of several media reports. However, Love is blind is still hugely popular and a magnet for discussion on social media, and the new season is sure to dominate the discussion this month.

The critically acclaimed British queer dramedy was released by Netflix on October 3rd Heart stopper returns for a third season. In the new season, Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) deepen their unlikely friendship into romance, while Charlie struggles with some mental health issues. The big news for season three is this Bridgerton Star Jonathan Bailey makes a guest appearance as Jack Maddox, Charlie’s celebrity crush. Heart stopper is an adaptation of Alice Oseman’s graphic novels about two teenagers who fall in love during high school, and quickly became a word-of-mouth hit for the streamer when it premiered in April 2022.

Netflix continues its foray into the world of sports with the release of its highly anticipated NBA documentaries From 5 on October 9th, a few weeks before the start of the new season. Set during the 2023-24 NBA season, the series follows current stars Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis and Jayson Tatum and provides a behind-the-scenes look at their professional lives. From 5 comes from James and Maverick Carter’s Uninterrupted, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions.

A possible gem for fans of action films The Shadow Walkers will be released on Netflix on October 17th. The Indonesian film, directed by Timo Tjahjanto, tells the story of Codename 13, a young assassin who is suspended after a failed mission. The film comes from the filmmaker behind Netflix The big 4 (2022) May the devil take you (2018) and The night comes for us (2018) and the Shudder release May the devil take you too (2020). Already highly regarded by genre fans, Tjahjanto is set for bigger things and is behind the upcoming sequel to the Bob Odenkirk-directed action film No one.

Tyler Perry, the prolific writer, director and producer, debuts his first drama series for Netflix. Tyler Perry’s beauty in blackthis month. The 16 one-hour episodes of Beauty in black will be released in two parts, with the first eight episodes releasing on October 24th. A release date for part two has not yet been announced.

At the end of the month, Netflix will release the second season of its popular political thriller The diplomat. Helmed by Keri Russell, the show is a dramatic and suspenseful examination of the “special relationship” between the US and Britain, and features plenty of espionage and political intrigue.
