New music series comes to Garfield Park in Indianapolis

If you missed the summer concerts at Garfield Park, Do not worry. Live music returns to the park this fall.

Indianapolis-based nonprofit arts organizations Big Car Collaborative + Arte Mexicano en Indiana bring Levitt VIBE, a seven-week live music series, to Garfield Park on Sunday afternoons in September and October.

The concerts are family-friendly and admission is free. They take place on the lawn in front of the Garfield Park Art Center and Pagoda at 2432 Conservatory Dr. There are food trucks there each week.

The events will take place on the following dates from 12 to 3 p.m.:

  • 1, 8, 22 and 29 September + 6, 13 and 20 October

“The idea is to further enliven an underused area of ​​our park with free outdoor music experiences and neighborly, inclusive, fun and creative social gatherings,” said Jim Walker, executive director and co-founder of Big Car and longtime Garfield Park resident. “Our local organization has been working with neighbors in the park for more than a decade. We are excited to continue sharing the gifts of music, art and fun in this way.”

Girl Ultra will perform on Sunday, October 13th, and her discography includes everything from R&B ballads to danceable electronic beats.

Performances will span a wide range of genres, and there will be activities such as haiku writing stations, Garfield Park postcard coloring, interactive art making, featured local vendors, and open picnics. Visitors are welcome to bring their own food, drinks, and lawn chairs or blankets.

This live music series is made possible by the Los Angeles-based Levitt Foundation, and the neighborhood was selected as one of three neighborhoods as part of its pilot program to support free concerts and promote equitable music ecosystems.
