NFL makes changes to Tush Push for 2024 season

NFL makes changes to Tush Push for 2024 season

The “Tush Push” will look a little different in the 2024-25 NFL season.

Although there were discussions about a possible ban on the butt pusher in 2024, the league decided to keep it, albeit with modifications.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, a rule clarification has changed the tush push. Pushers must now be at least one yard behind the quarterback before the ball is snapped. The new formation prevents players from immediately shoving behind the quarterback.

The tush push has become a much-discussed topic in recent seasons. The Philadelphia Eagles have perfected the move, which features quarterback Jalen Hurts lining up under center with two players directly behind him.

After Hurts snaps the ball, his teammates push him forward, which has been successful in most cases. The Eagles use this play instead of a quarterback sneak and usually do it on 4th and short or 4th and goal from the goal line.

The seemingly unstoppable nature of the game led to discussions about a league ban, but ultimately the league decided that this change would be enough to allow the game to continue, at least for this season.

While the Eagles have perfected the tush push, they aren’t the only team to use it. However, no team has done it better than Philadelphia, as they have become something of a poster child for the game.

The Eagles will look to perfect the new tush push on Friday night when they open their season against the Green Bay Packers in Brazil. This will be the league’s first game in Brazil and the first Friday night game on the league’s opening weekend in over 50 years.

Hurts and the Eagles will look to start their 2024 season on the right foot after a disappointing end to the 2023 season. After a 10-1 season opener, the Eagles lost five of their final six regular season games and were then dominated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round.

The Eagles hope to start 1-0 on Friday, while the Packers look to continue their winning streak from the end of last season. The Packers finished the regular season with three straight wins and seven of their last 10 games. They then defeated the Dallas Cowboys on Wild Card weekend before losing narrowly to the San Francisco 49ers.
