NFL Power Rankings Week 4: Pittsburgh Steelers among the league’s elite players

NFL Power Rankings Week 4: Pittsburgh Steelers among the league’s elite players

The Pittsburgh Steelers started the 2024 season 3-0 after a 20-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3.

Pittsburgh’s defense once again put on a dominant performance, holding the Chargers’ offense to just -5 total yards in the second half. Meanwhile, the offense put on its best performance of the 2024 season so far, and quarterback Justin Fields may have cemented his spot as the team’s starter over Russell Wilson.

With the win, the Steelers climbed once again in the NFL Power Rankings of media experts, and one of them actually ranked Pittsburgh in the top five. Here’s a look at exactly where the Steelers stand.

NFL Power Rankings Week 4: Pittsburgh Steelers

Vinnie Iyer, Sporting News: 2 (+2)

I: “The Steelers don’t score a lot of points for their style — or points, period — but when they control the action and focus on the run to complement their dominant defense, the burden of victory is light. They’re not going to change that formula much for Mike Tomlin, especially at the QB position.”

Sayre Bedinger, NFL Spin Zone: 9

Conditioner: “There’s no question the Steelers are 3-0 and undefeated this season. But the Steelers need to continue to make progress on offense before people really take them seriously as one of the top teams in the AFC. And there was some progress against the Los Angeles Chargers. Justin Fields threw for 245 yards against the Chargers and Pittsburgh was a really solid 7 of 14 third downs in that game against the Chargers. They knocked Justin Herbert out of the game and it really felt like they sailed to a win in a number of ways. But aside from the 3-0 start, the big question for the Steelers will be whether or not Justin Fields will continue to play center going forward. Jokes have been circulating on Twitter/X about Russell Wilson’s calf injury lingering into Week 4 after the Steelers won their third straight game to start the season, and how could anyone expect Fields to play with those results? Fields had two touchdowns and it looks like he’s going to improve from week to week in Arthur Smith’s offense will feel more comfortable.”

Taylor Wirth, NBC Sports Bay Area: 10 (+3)

Wirth: “Justin Fields has done an admirable job in place of Russell Wilson, although he shouldn’t be guaranteed a starting spot whenever he returns. No matter who is under center, the defense will carry them.”

Peter Dewey, Sports Illustrated: 10 (+4)

Dewey: “Justin Fields has done a solid three weeks for Pittsburgh and the defense has been one of the best in the league, allowing just 26 points in three games. At 3-0, Pittsburgh looks ready for the playoffs – especially since Mike Tomlin has never finished below .500.”
