North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex expansion moving forward, city says

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A project to expand the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex is making “visible progress,” according to the city.

The city provided an update on the project on Friday, saying the second phase of the Champions Boulevard expansion is just over halfway complete. As of Friday, contractors have been installing drainage infrastructure and sub-grades for the road, according to the city.

The second phase of the expansion is scheduled to be completed by spring 2025. After this phase is completed, a date will be set for the start of the third phase of the road expansion – for which a contract has already been signed and the designs are already ready.

“The expansion of this facility will allow the city to host larger tournaments as well as multiple tournaments and special events simultaneously,” the city said in a statement. “Youth sports have seen tremendous growth, particularly in baseball, softball and soccer. The additional fields created by this expansion will allow more of our local youth to participate in youth sports.”

Elements included in the overall expansion of the complex include five new soccer fields, six baseball fields, freshwater ponds, as well as walking trails, playgrounds and picnic shelters.

Construction on the complex’s expansion began in May, and site preparation was nearly complete Friday. The city said contractors are digging ponds, leveling and working on erosion control measures — and work is expected to continue over the next few months.

According to officials, the next steps include the construction of an underground drainage system, the installation of a utility infrastructure and the preparation of a construction platform. After that, the above-ground work will begin.

The city expects construction to be completed by September 2025.
