Northern Lights on display, short warm-up heads to Metro Detroit this weekend

4Weather warning – After a cold, frosty start to Thursday, sports fans will be treated to pleasant weather in downtown Detroit.

With mostly clear to partly cloudy skies, temperatures will gradually drop to over 50°C over the course of the evening. This means excellent sky conditions for the chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

A G4 geomagnetic storm warning is in effect for Thursday and Friday, making it the strongest since May. In areas away from urban light pollution, the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights is between 8 p.m. and midnight.

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, the solar storm could “stress power grids already weakened by the hurricanes.” The remnants of Milton will continue to move away from the United States across the Atlantic.

Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 40s across southeast Michigan. The cooler temperatures will be near Ann Arbor, Howell and Lapeer.

Friday

Temperatures Friday afternoon will peak around 70 degrees in southeast Michigan. (WDIV)

Friday will be partly cloudy with warm weather returning. Afternoon temperatures will peak in the mid-70s, which is about 10 degrees above average.

A fire weather watch is in effect for Sanilac County in southeastern Michigan Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The watch will also cover the Saginaw Bay region and Northern Michigan. Dry, warm weather with gusty winds increases the risk of fire. Winds will be from the southwest at 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph over the Thumb.

Nighttime temperatures will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s.

Saturday

Behind a cold front, cooler air will flow into the Detroit metropolitan area on Saturday. There may be some showers, especially at night. Highs will be in the mid 60s and lows will be in the mid 40s to 50s.

Sunday

There is a greater chance of rain showers on Sunday. Highs will be in the low to mid 60s. The lowest temperatures are around 40 degrees.

Monday

Then cooler air will move into southeastern Michigan on Monday. With the possibility of showers, highs will only be in the mid 50s, which is typical for late October and early November.
