Packers’ Jordan Love aims to return in Week 5

The Packers rely on Malik Willis under the middle in week 2, while Jordan Love is recovering from his MCL sprain. Injured reserve is not an option, so a return to play within four weeks is possible.

In the latest update on Love’s status, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the second-year starter is aiming to be back in his place by Week 5 (video link). The injury is not as serious as it initially appeared, Rapoport adds, which is a positive sign. Love initially appeared to have a three-to-six week recovery time ahead of him, making Week 5 the best-case scenario for him to be on the field.

Willis started just three times during his three-year tenure with the Titans, all of which came in his rookie season. The former third-round pick didn’t develop as hoped in Tennessee, but was surprised to be traded just before the season began. Willis, 25, spent the preseason getting to know the head coach. Matt LaFleur‘s plan and he will be expected to carry out the offensive for a short period of time. Sean Clifford – who like Michael Pratt was one of those whose roster the Packers cut – is serving as a replacement for the team.

Love has been questioned as to whether he is a good fit to be Green Bay’s coach. Aaron Rodgers successor before last season. After an inconsistent start to the 2023 season, the 25-year-old put up strong numbers down the stretch and in the postseason. Despite his limited experience, Love secured a monster extension this offseason along with a number of other young passers. He is now locked in at an AAV of $55 million, a number that put him at the top in that regard through 2022. Daniel PrescottThe new contract with the Cowboys has been drawn up.

Given the big commitment Green Bay made to Love, the team will no doubt take a cautious approach to his return. Success with Willis at the helm could help the Packers bench Love for an extra game or two, but even without that commitment, their starter should be back relatively soon.
