Patriots security: Jabrill Peppers arrested for assault and cocaine possession

BRAINTREE, Mass. (TNND) — New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers was arrested this weekend on assault and cocaine possession charges, police confirmed to The National News Desk (TNND) on Monday.

Police in Braintree, Massachusetts, said they responded to a residential address early Saturday morning after receiving reports of a disturbance. A caller told police that there had been an argument between two people.

Officers said their investigation led to Peppers, 29, being arrested and a victim of the alleged altercation being treated at the scene by emergency services.

Peppers is charged with assault, assault with a dangerous weapon, strangulation and possession of a Class B substance, suspected to be cocaine. His arraignment hearing is scheduled for Monday in Quincy District Court.

The Patriots acknowledged the situation in a statement.

“We are aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend that police are currently investigating,” the team wrote. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

Also responding was the team’s head coach, Jerod Mayo, who said during a news conference Monday that he had spoken to Peppers about his arrest. He also said he discussed it with the team.

“He called me that morning,” Mayo said of Peppers. “Throughout training camp and throughout the season, we talk about situations that happen around the league so we can learn from other people. As we gather information, I think the players need to know about this so we can learn from what happened.”

Peppers did not play in the team’s Sunday loss to the Miami Dolphins due to a shoulder injury. Mayo said the decision not to play Peppers had nothing to do with his altercation with police.

Peppers’ arrest follows police arresting Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill in September after pulling him over for speeding. An officer involved in handcuffing Hill and placing him face down on the street was later placed on leave.

The wide receiver celebrated a touchdown later that day by mimicking the handcuffs being removed.

“He’s gotta go, man,” Hill said of the officer in a news conference. “At that moment, not only did he treat me badly, but he also disrespected my teammates. He had some crazy words to say to them and they didn’t even do anything. What have they done to you? They just walk on the sidewalk. He’s gotta go, man.”
