Peoria-area cafe closes one of its branches

With “sincere gratitude” and “heaviest hearts,” the owners of Eli’s Coffee Shop have announced the closure of their Mackinaw location. The last day of opening will be September 6.

The company announced the closure in a Facebook post on Friday.

In a statement on the company’s website, owners Rachel and Weston Berchtold wrote, “We are closing our doors in two weeks knowing that we could be a positive part of the history of this building and this community for as long as we could.”

The Mackinaw location opened in 2022 at 116 S. Main St. in a building that formerly housed Heartland Bank.

It was the company’s fourth location in the Peoria area. Locally owned Eli’s also operates cafes in Morton, Tremont and Metamora. Those locations remain open.

Eli’s Coffee Shops are known for their distinctive locations, including the renovated Mackinaw Bank. The Morton shop, which opened in 2005, is located in a former building at 205 W. Jefferson St. The Tremont location opened in 2014 at 105 W. Pearl St. in the historic Tremont Depot. The Metamora shop, which opened in 2017, is located in a 140-year-old building at 101 W. Partridge St. on the Village Square.
