Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber ties MLB record with 13th leadoff home run of the season

Kyle Schwarber continued his hitting power on Wednesday by hitting another home run in the Philadelphia Phillies’ game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

It was the 44th leadoff home run of his career, putting him in ninth place all time.

The 416-footer to right field at Rogers Centre gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead and was Schwarber’s 13th leadoff home run of the season, tying the MLB record for most home runs in a single season set by Alfonso Soriano of the New York Yankees in 2003.

Schwarber’s 32nd home run of the season was his fourth in two games after hitting three bombs in the Phillies’ 10-9 win over Toronto on Tuesday.

Before that trio of home runs, Schwarber hadn’t hit a home run since August 14 and had hit just one home run in his previous 24 games. He also had a three-home run game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 7 and has completed six games with multiple home runs for the NL East-leading Phillies this season.

If he doesn’t continue hitting so many home runs, Schwarber won’t be able to match his career high in home runs (47, set in 2022), but he has a chance to set a personal RBI record. After Wednesday’s home run, he has 89 RBIs this season, 15 away from his career high of 104, which he will set in 2023.
