The public could still pass through the cordoned off section of Dame Judi Dench Walk – either by using the walkway closer to the Ouse or by turning around and walking through the Museum Gardens.

Two police officers formed the cordon and stood on either side of the tower at the foot of Marygate.

Near the tower inside the barrier, a mountain bike was seen lying on its side on the ground.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We were called to a report of an assault in the Marygate area of York which occurred at around 12.45pm today. A male suspect subsequently fled the scene.

“Upon arrival we found two men with injuries, one of whom was taken to hospital for treatment.

“The investigation is still at an early stage and is still ongoing.
