In the very first meeting between the Irish (1-1) – who are ranked 7th in the US LBM Coaches Poll and 5th in the AP Poll – and the unranked Huskies (2-0) of the Mid-American Conference, NIU ND surprised with a 16-13 victory.

Notre Dame lost to another MAC school, Marshall, in its 2022 home opener, Marcus Freeman’s first game at Notre Dame Stadium as head coach.
